Description
This vintage western Montana relic homestead brings me back so many years! I photographed this gorgeous scene several times between 1991 and 1994. It's in a tiny little burg called Potomac, and a place I once called home, resting in the shadows of the Rattlesnake, Mission, and Garnet mountain ranges. My love for Montana and the vastness of the American West all started when I first visited the region in 1988. Not long after, we built our cabin just 1.5 miles from this old homestead and made it a part-time residence.
At the time, I was obviously photographing slides with a film camera. The scene you see here remained relatively unchanged until around 1995, when the largest building to the left began to collapse due to a heavy winter snow accumulation. I loved capturing this scene during the late afternoon to experience the dramatic golden sidelight. By using the spot meter on the brightest barn, I rendered the Lodgepole and Ponderosa forest on the foothills in the distance as dark and mysterious.
